"No Harm, No Foul" by Erik Evy

There is a deep-rooted sense of hard work and drive buried in this indie artist’s music. I can honestly say that it has been such a treat being the small part of this artist’s career that we have been. In fact, this artist has had an impact on our brand as well - so when they reach out and ask us to give them everything we’ve got, we drop everything and just - do. Without further ado, here is Erik Evy and his newest single, “No Harm No Foul.”

Here we are, talking about Erik Evy again. It’s been a little while since the “If My Boss Hears Remix” and honestly, it shows. Evy’s flow has increased tenfold; couple an increase in experiences with the acquisition of new team members and now we’re cooking with Crisco. The “No Harm No Foul” music video, done by Danny Dominguez, is in a sweet spot of amateur and big business. Without feeling like something a corporation dumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into, Erik Evy’s newest music video feels endearing yet professional, a staple of the Erik Evy brand. In my opinion, Evy is the perfect depiction of an independent artist; the music industry is never about settling where you’re at, and Evy is more than aware that a break out means he has to do the hard work, something depicted in his constant growth.

Alright, that’s enough gushing - let’s get right into the good stuff. Erik Evy is an independent hip-hop artist from Chicago. Drawing inspiration from artists like Mac Miller, Amine, and J. Cole, Evy finds little ways to interweave his own optimism on the world. In the same fashion, as the artists mentioned, Erik Evy has a unique way of telling stories and uplifting his listeners. With a knack for infectious creativity mixed with expansive lyricism, Evy captures the essence of just - being human.

Erik Evy has been working at this for a while now, releasing his first single in early 2020 and his debut EP earlier this year in March. Periscopes focused on capturing Evy’s laid-back attitude, however, Erik’s constant barrage of projects and singles shows that this up-and-coming artist posses a diverse spread of “vibes.”

This inevitably brings us to Erik Evy’s newest song, “No Harm No Foul,” a light-hearted feel-good song. Evy attempts to poke fun at love, pushing a feeling of freedom onto his listeners. While the song itself is warm, Evy’s overall messaging is clear: “Let’s just have fun…why get serious?”

Erik Evy is well known through his fans as a clever lyricist with sporadic cadences. Through months of hard work and releases, Evy has found a way to reign in his chaotic flow to create a sort of - “planned chaos”, keeping his listeners on their toes and making his music easy to catch a vibe to. Evy reflects on this sentiment, saying:

“I did not have a goal in mind when I made this song. It was just a matter of channeling the feeling I was getting when I heard the beat from Wonderlust Beats [the producer].”

Erik’s clever meanings are woven cleverly into the lyrics of “No Harm No Foul.” Eric laughs while thinking back on his inspiration for the first verse.

“The first verse features bars that include computer references (key, monitor, mouse, hard drive, processing), all as a reference to online dating. I don’t really have an opinion on it, just funny to think there will be a generation of kids who [were born] because their parents met on an app.”

Erik Evy, Chicago based indie hip-hop artist

Erik’s improvement in flow is something that has been a real pleasure to watch. I have always liked Erik Evy’s integrated meanings and lyricism, all while finding different beats. When going through Erik Evy’s catalog, the one thing that stands out is the fact that this indie hip-hop artist has a diverse array of instrumental beats. From fast-paced and heavy-hitting to easy-going and chilled out, Erik Evy has something for everything. On top of that, the music video and production that went into this project really tie everything together, elevating Erik Evy’s performance. In just a year, this artist has come so far from the starting point, and his fans see and love it.

Overall, “No Harm No Foul” is a fantastic addition to Erik Evy’s catalog and is something I plan on listening to until - well forever. This newest single acts as a build-up for Evy’s up-and-coming project that he plans on releasing by the end of the year. Personally, I am always looking forward to a new Erik Evy project - ever since the early “If My Boss Hears” days. However, especially when it comes to music and the industry, you can’t rush perfection and you definitely can’t rush a breakout. It’s the keen awareness that Erik Evy has of this that sells me on his music and brand every time. Here’s to another banger, Erik.
